Tips on how to take care of your skylight

Having a skylight fitted in your property can significantly increase the amount of sunlight that is let into a room, so there's no wonder so many people are choosing to have them installed into their homes. As skylights are installed, after some time problems occur occasionally because of leaks or simply due to poor workmanship during the installation process.

What shall I do if my skylight is leaking?

There are a few minor steps to take if you suspect you have a leak related to your skylight.

First of all, make sure it is definitely a leak, many people confuse condensation issues with leaks. To go about determining whether it is a leak or not, examine around the corners and and where the glass and metal meet for cracks or other types of damages. If you come across any cracks or splits, then you are right in thinking the skylight is leaking. If not, it may be a problem with the flashing or simply condensation. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, any reputable roofing contractor or property repairs specialist will be able to come out and identify if there is an issue on the skylight itself.

More often than not, we find the answer to the problem is, as we mentioned previously, a complication with the flashing. Damaged, loose and improper installed flashing allows water to work it's way into your home and damage the property. Therefore, you should act fast, and either seal the flashing yourself, if you are comfortable doing so, or call out a professional to execute the job.

I have recently had a skylight installed, but it's causing me problems, what should I do?

If you find yourself in this situation, we advise you seek out an experience skylight installer who can come out and rectify the situation. This is because, the person or contractor hired to install the present skylight, has not installed it as it should have been. It is important you always hire someone who has experience in installing skylights and knows exactly what they are doing, this way you shouldn't have any problems due to poor workmanship.
